Sanchin (a minha opinião)

Hello,

...

About Sanchin, in my opinion the kata does not have bunkai, but, as my instructor says:

"In Sanchin, you are going to find every answer you have in Kaisho kata"

Strange isn’t it???

I think Kanryo Higaonna Sensei changed the kata, influenced by the fighting form practiced in Okinawa (Ti), long before the introduction of Chinese martial arts in Okinawa. That way it was easy to introduce that kind of martial art to a people that did not have much education.

As we grow as martial artists we feel (all) the kata in different manners. In the beginning, we tend to focus on muscular power, then we tend to focus on breathing and visualise the energy flow.

We can try to explain everything in kata, why that arm goes that way, why you put the fingers in that way and so on.
We need to be aware that our structure (skeletal and muscular) is different from one person to the other, our way of thinking is different too.
A big man probably thinks that he does not need to think about vital points because he his strong enough to put someone to sleep.
In this way we have many approaches to a movement.
Then we have the approach in Kyusho bunkai that is difficult to master, most of the people don’t believe in energies, so why should they believe in “magic” spots?
It’s easier to do an uraken and break an opponent’s nose, rather than touching a point and control an opponent without harming him.
Every movement we do in kata can be explained in a logical way. In Sanchin we can arrange a bunkai for everything, even the bow (rei) can be a head butt.
In that way the Japanese are giving head butts to every one.
For me, Sanchin is only for my health.
I think it’s difficult enough to concentrate on rooting the stance, breathing correctly, visualise the energy flow, get body alignment and try not to think about the shime (testing the kata).
